The funds will support the construction of a new mother’s waiting house, children’s clinic and laundry facility at Cambine in Mozambique. The project is in partnership with the United Methodist Church’s General Board of Global Ministries.

One aspect of the Mozambique Initiative’s work with its partners in sub-Saharan Africa is to improve access to healthcare, especially for remote and rural communities. Through mobile clinics, Mozambicans in remote locations can access the same health services that exist in larger health facilities. Mobile clinics help reduce the overcrowding of referral hospitals and improve the quality of life in remote communities.

Oregon, Missouri — just 80 miles north of Kansas City — has a population of 837, and the average attendance at Oregon United Methodist Church is 64. This rural farming community knows the importance of water. That may be one reason why members donated $55,000 in 2022 to build wells in Mozambique.

For teenage girls in Mozambique, marrying before age 18 isn’t uncommon. Local United Methodist Churches in Mozambique are helping girls avoid these situations by training them to sew.

Recently the Health Board Department of the UMC in Mozambique provided a report on its activities occurring from June to September 2021, including mobile clinic activities.

From June to August 2021, crews worked to construct a new solar well at the Corrane Refugee Center in the district of Meconta in the Nampula province. This well supports the efforts by the Mozambican government, the UMC in Mozambique and other organizations to provide safe water to those displaced by the destabilization in the neighboring Cabo Delgado province. The new well serves 20,229 people, of which 9,605 are children.
