Solar Well Completed at Corrane Refugee Center in Northern Mozambique
From June to August 2021, crews worked to construct a new solar well at the Corrane Refugee Center in the district of Meconta in the Nampula province. This well supports the efforts by the Mozambican government, the UMC in Mozambique and other organizations to provide safe water to those displaced by the destabilization in the neighboring Cabo Delgado province. The new well serves 20,229 people, of which 9,605 are children.
“This is an example of a request from the government, partnership with the UMC in Mozambique and donors in Missouri working together to integrate a new model of well to this region,” says Mozambique Initiative Representatives Rev. Lucas Endicott and Ezequiel Marcos Nhantumbo. “It has been hard to know how we can respond to the suffering in the north, but this is a great example of one way.”
The well at the Corrane Refugee Center is the first solar well in the Nampula province. This well, which uses solar power to operate its electric pump, has a 10,000-liter water tank and three fountains for the community to collect water from. Other partners have drilled four hand-pump wells in the region.
